The Sussex Championship was, until 2010, decided on the outcome of a single event, being the Sussex Regatta. In addition to the normal regatta prizes, separate prizes were given for the Club doing best in IRC and PY classes at the regatta.

 

In 2010 the Sussex Combined Clubs Committee agreed to extend the scope of the Championship. The Championship is now decided on a series of qualifying events and has been referred to as the Sussex Challenge Series by the Sussex Combined Clubs Committee. It now consists of a series of regattas - the Sussex Regatta, the Brighton Marina Yacht Club (BMYC) Regatta, the Sussex Yacht Club (SYC) Regatta and the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club (SHYC) RNLI Regatta. From 2011 it will also include the Arun Yacht Club Regatta.

 

Using a high point scoring system, prizes are awarded to the boats that perform best over the whole series of regattas in both IRC and SCCH (PY) classes. In addition a prize is awarded to the club that performed best overall.

The results of the Sussex Challenge Series 2010 were as follows. The trophies for the Sussex Challenge Series were presented during the prize giving for the RNLI (Eastbourne) regatta on Monday, 30 August 2010.

 

Overall IRC:

1st – Etoile (SHYC)

2nd – Vision (BMYC)

3rd – Jeneral Lee (BMYC)

 

Overall SCCH:

1st – Kereru (BMYC)

There were no other qualifying boats

 

Overall Club:

1st – BMYC (Vision, Jeneral Lee, Kereru)

2nd – SHYC (Etoile, White Rose)

There were no other qualifying clubs

 

The final methodology for the scoring of results was as follows. Following earlier consultation between representatives of each club it was agreed that:

• The Sussex Combined Clubs Committee had stipulated the Sussex Challenge Series would consist of one or more IRC classes, one or more SCCH classes, each to be decided by the organising committee of a qualifying event.
• Additional classes included in a qualifying event are outside of the scope of the Sussex Challenge Series.
• A spreadsheet and a high-point scoring matrix submitted by Geoff Bryant would be accepted for scoring the Sussex Challenge Series.

 

Results of that challenge series were scored as follows:

 

• Scoring data was taken from each of the qualifying events, being; Sussex Regatta, BMYC Regatta and RNLI (Eastbourne) Regatta.  n.b. SYC Regatta is a qualifying event; but, did not take place in 2010.
• All boats starting at least one race of a qualifying event were scored for that qualifying event.
• A High Point scoring system was applied using a table that can be viewed here.
• Results of the Sussex Regatta are a double point award.
• Only those boats competing in three or more qualifying events were included in determining overall class and club results.
• All IRC fleet results are combined for inclusion in Overall IRC class.
• All SCCH fleet results are combined for inclusion in Overall SCCH class. n.b. qualifying events substituting PY for SCCH class were scored using Open PY handicaps.
• Results of the Overall IRC and SCCH classes were tabulated and sorted by Club to determine the Overall Club Winner.
